About AQA

AQA Sets Longer Papers and More Practical Work

AQA is the largest exam board in England, and many British curriculum schools across the UAE and the Gulf enter students with it. Your child sits the same papers as students in England, marked to the same scheme.

AQA calls its Combined Science course Trilogy. It runs as six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks each, giving 420 marks in total. The course sets 21 required practicals, three more than Edexcel asks for.

Your tutor teaches the exact AQA course your school entered your child for. We work from the UAE, so lessons sit after the school day in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha.

Why us

Every One of Our Tutors Teaches AQA

All 29 tutors teach AQA

Every tutor on our team teaches the AQA course. Nobody has to translate a question out of another board's wording halfway through a lesson.

The equation sheet

Physics papers now come with an equation sheet. Marks still go to students who know which equation to pick, so lessons drill choosing over memorising.

21 practicals, covered

AQA sets 21 required practicals for Combined Science. The written papers test them, so your tutor walks through each method, not just the result.

Open a subject to see how many papers it has, how long each one runs, and how many required practicals the course sets.

Maths (three exams, tiered)

Three exams of 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks each. The first is non-calculator. Algebra carries the most marks at higher tier.

Physics (two exams, tiered)

Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks each. AQA sets ten required practicals here, and an equation sheet now comes with the paper.

Chemistry (two exams, tiered)

Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks each, with eight required practicals. Quantitative chemistry and the mole are where most higher tier marks go.

English Literature (two exams, untiered)

Closed book, so students memorise quotations. One paper covers Shakespeare and the nineteenth century novel, the other modern texts and the poetry anthology.

What Every Tutor Clears First

AQA questions

AQA Questions From Gulf Parents

Does AQA still make my child memorise physics equations?

No. Ofqual now requires every board to hand out an equation sheet in physics and combined science papers. Your child still has to choose the right equation, which is the skill we teach.

How many required practicals does AQA set?

Twenty one for Combined Science Trilogy. The separate sciences set ten for biology, eight for chemistry and ten for physics. All of them are examined in writing, never in a practical exam.

What is AQA Trilogy, and is it worth two GCSEs?

Trilogy is the AQA name for Combined Science. It is a double award worth two GCSEs and gives two grades, from 9-9 down to 1-1. Students sit six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes.

Can my child resit an AQA exam in November?

Only maths and English language have a November series, and your child must be 16 by 31 August. Every other AQA subject sits its exams in May and June.

Which AQA subjects can you teach from the UAE?

All thirteen on our list, because every tutor on the team teaches AQA. That covers maths, the three sciences, both Englishes, business, computer science, economics, psychology, sociology, history and French.

Is the AQA GCSE the same as an International GCSE?

No. We teach the English GCSE, which Ofqual regulates. International GCSEs are a separate qualification that Ofqual does not regulate. Your child's exam timetable will say which one the school entered.
