GCSE Biology Tutors

Five specialist Biology tutors, every one teaching both AQA and Pearson Edexcel, at both tiers. Lessons work from past papers and real mark scheme feedback.

Why GCSE Tutors

Six things that actually move a Biology grade.

Biology carries more to remember than either other science, and the exam rewards precise wording. Students who revise by reading rarely find that out until the mock.

A Biology specialist only

Your tutor teaches Biology every week. They are not a chemist covering Biology because the timetable needed filling.

Recall tested, not assumed

Every lesson starts with questions on earlier topics, so content learned in Year 10 is still there in May.

Both boards covered

All five tutors teach the AQA course and all five teach Edexcel, so the match is to your paper.

Tier chosen on the evidence

We look at what the mock papers actually scored, then say which entry gives your child the better result.

Practical wording rehearsed

Practical questions ask for variables, repeats and controls. We rehearse those until the phrasing is second nature.

Nothing comes as a surprise

You get the lesson notes and a monthly report, so a slipping grade is never the first you hear of it.

The qualification

GCSE Biology at a Glance

Schools enter students at Foundation or Higher. Foundation stops at grade 5. Higher reaches 9, so anyone aiming past a pass needs it.

AQA and Edexcel both examine this with two written papers. Each runs 1 hour 45 minutes for 100 marks, and each is half the grade.

No coursework counts towards the grade. The written papers test the practical work, which rewards students who learned the method.

Syllabus

Every Biology Topic We Cover

The seven topic areas on the AQA course. Edexcel orders them differently but examines the same biology, so lessons map across either way.

01
Cell biology
Cell structure, microscopy, transport across membranes, cell division
02
Organisation
Enzymes, the digestive system, the heart and lungs, plant transport
03
Infection and response
Pathogens, the immune system, vaccination, drug development
04
Bioenergetics
Photosynthesis, limiting factors, aerobic and anaerobic respiration
05
Homeostasis and response
The nervous system, hormones, blood glucose, the kidneys
06
Inheritance and ecology
Genetics, evolution, food chains, carbon and water cycles
Where the marks actually go
The six-mark questions carry the grade boundaries. They reward linked reasoning, which is a skill, not a fact to memorise.
Past papers

Practice From Real Biology Papers

Lessons work through genuine past papers and their mark schemes, not imitation questions written to look like them.

AQA

AQA GCSE Biology

Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes. Paper 1 covers cells, organisation, infection and bioenergetics. Paper 2 covers homeostasis, inheritance and ecology.

Equal in length and marks to AQA, with its own topic order. Tutors prepare students for the version their school actually uses.

Mark schemes

Marked as an examiner would

Your tutor marks the work against the real mark scheme, so we catch an answer that describes where it should explain.

Questions pulled from several years of papers on one topic, so we fix a weak area instead of revisiting it once.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

Every lessonThe difference-maker
How a Biology lesson runs

An hour spent writing, not listening.

Marking comes before teaching

Your tutor marks a recent paper before planning anything, then builds the lessons around the questions that scored badly rather than the next chapter in the book.

Past papersSix markersRequired practicalsBoth tiers

Answers written, not discussed

Students write the six-mark answer in the lesson and watch it marked, so the gap between knowing and scoring closes.

Retrieval at the start

Each lesson opens with questions on older topics, so Year 10 content does not quietly disappear before May.

Exam technique

Where Biology Marks Are Really Lost

Most lost marks are not topics a student cannot do. They come from loose wording, describing when the question says explain, and graphs read carelessly.

Describe against explain

Describe asks what happens. Explain asks why. Students lose whole answers by doing the first well when the paper wanted the second.

Loose terminology

Mark schemes want the precise word. Saying a cell "takes in" a substance scores nothing where diffusion or active transport was needed.

Practical detail

Naming the control variable and the repeat earns marks. Vague answers about "being accurate" earn none.

Data read too fast

Graph and table questions carry easy marks. Students lose them by quoting a figure without its unit or the trend asked for.

You See Every Biology Lesson

A single mark tells you little about recall across a whole course. These four reports show what is actually sticking.

  • Notes after every lesson
  • Topic checklist, red to green
  • Monthly progress report
  • A recording of each lesson

Questions

GCSE Biology Questions

Should my child take Foundation or Higher?

If your child is aiming past grade 5, Higher is the only route there. We read the mocks with you before the school decides.

Which boards do your Biology tutors teach?

All five teach the AQA course and all five also teach Edexcel. Each profile lists the boards that tutor covers, subject by subject.

My child revises for hours and the grade will not move.

Reading notes feels like revision but tests nothing. We switch them to answering real questions and marking against the scheme.

Is Biology harder than Combined Science?

It carries more content and goes further, including extra ecology and the kidneys. Students taking it usually want a science at the next level.

What is the usual weekly commitment?

One hour a week works for most. Some add a second session closer to the exam, or straight after a disappointing mock.

Do you cover the required practicals?

Yes. Because they are tested in writing, tutors drill the variables, the repeats and the control until the wording is automatic.
