Why GCSE Tutors

Six things a general English tutor will not give you.

This is the one subject with nothing to revise. There is no content to learn, which is why reading notes does nothing and timed practice does everything.

An exam skills specialist

Your tutor teaches this course every week and knows how each question is marked, which is the whole subject.

Unseen texts every lesson

Students cannot prepare the extract, only the method. Lessons practise that method on texts they have never read.

Writing marked, not praised

Creative and viewpoint writing come back against the real criteria, with the band stated and the reason for it.

Both boards covered

Five tutors teach the AQA course and two also teach Edexcel, so the match is to your paper.

Timing fixed first

Most lost marks here are unfinished answers. We practise to the clock until the final question is always attempted.

Parents see the detail

Notes after each lesson and a monthly report, so you know which skills moved and which did not.

The qualification

GCSE English Language at a Glance

GCSE English Language is graded 9 to 1. There are no tiers, so every student sits the same paper and the whole grade range is open.

AQA sets two written papers. Each lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 80 marks, and is worth half the grade. Edexcel follows the same shape.

Spoken language is assessed separately by the school. It appears on the certificate as a pass, merit or distinction and does not change the 9 to 1 grade.

Syllabus

What the English Language Papers Ask For

There is no syllabus to memorise. These are the six skills the mark scheme actually rewards, and every one of them improves with practice.

01
Information retrieval
Finding and quoting the detail the question asks for, quickly
02
Language analysis
Naming the technique, then explaining the effect on the reader
03
Structure analysis
How a text opens, shifts focus and closes, not just its words
04
Evaluation
Responding to a statement with evidence on both sides
05
Comparison
Linking two non-fiction texts by viewpoint, not by feature spotting
06
Writing
Description, narrative and viewpoint, written to time and to purpose
Where the marks actually go
Writing is worth half of each paper. A student who analyses well but writes carelessly is capped long before the grade boundaries.
Past papers

Practice From Real English Language Papers

Lessons work through genuine past papers and their mark schemes, not imitation questions written to look like them.

AQA

Paper 1 is fiction reading and descriptive or narrative writing. Paper 2 is two non-fiction texts and writing to present a viewpoint.

Marked as an examiner would

Work comes back with the band stated and the reason given, so a student knows what moves an answer up rather than guessing.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

How a English Language lesson runs

An hour built around the marks your child is losing.

We start from the mark scheme, not a model answer

Your tutor marks a recent paper first and finds which question is costing the grade. The lesson is built from that, not from a generic essay plan.

Unseen textsTimed writingCommand wordsComparison

Written live, then marked

Students write in the lesson and watch it marked against the criteria, so the gap between knowing and scoring closes.

A new text every week

Each lesson uses an extract the student has not seen, because that is exactly what the exam will do.

Exam technique

Where English Language Marks Are Really Lost

Most lost marks are not ability. They come from running out of time, spotting techniques without explaining them, and answering a question nobody asked.

Time, not talent

The last question usually carries the most marks and is the one left unfinished. Fixing the clock often moves a grade on its own.

Spotting without explaining

Naming a simile scores nothing by itself. The mark comes from what it does to the reader, in the writer's specific context.

Evidence left out

Points made without a quotation stay in the lowest band however sensible they sound. Every point needs its line from the text.

Accuracy in writing

Sentence variety, paragraphing and punctuation carry their own marks. Strong ideas written in one long paragraph lose them.

You See Every English Lesson

Progress in this subject is hard to read from a single grade. These four reports show which skill is moving and which is not.

Questions

GCSE English Language Questions

There are no tiers, so what decides the grade?

Every student sits the same paper and the full 9 to 1 range is open. The grade comes from the band each answer reaches.

Which boards do your English tutors teach?

All five teach the AQA course and two also teach Edexcel. Each profile lists the boards that tutor covers, subject by subject.

Can you prepare for a November resit?

Yes. English Language and Maths are the two subjects with a November series. We run intensive resit blocks from September.

My child reads widely but the grade is stuck.

Reading well and answering well are different skills. The exam rewards a method, and the method can be taught directly.

Does the spoken part affect the grade?

No. It is assessed by the school and reported separately as a pass, merit or distinction. It does not change the 9 to 1 grade.

How often should lessons run?

One 60-minute lesson weekly suits most students. Two is common in the term before the exam, or after a weak mock.
