Why GCSE Tutors

Six things a general tutor will not give you.

Maths marks are lost in specific, repeatable ways. Everything below exists because of something a student kept dropping marks on.

A Maths specialist only

Your tutor teaches GCSE Maths every week. They are not a science tutor covering Maths because the timetable needed filling.

Marked like an examiner

Work comes back against the real mark scheme, so method marks lost to missing working show up long before the exam does.

Tier decided on evidence

Foundation caps the grade at 5. We look at mock papers with you and say plainly which tier the marks support.

Both boards covered

Ten tutors teach the AQA course and nine also teach Edexcel, so the match is to your paper, not to whoever is free.

Every lesson recorded

Students rewatch the hard parts before a mock without paying for the explanation twice.

Parents see the detail

Notes after each lesson and a monthly report, so you know which topics moved and which did not.

The qualification

GCSE Maths at a Glance

GCSE Maths is graded 9 to 1 and sat at one of two tiers. Foundation caps the grade at 5. Higher runs from 4 up to 9.

All three boards set three papers of equal weight, each lasting 90 minutes. One paper is non-calculator; the other two allow a calculator.

The tier is chosen with your school, usually after the Year 11 mocks. Our tutors go through those mock papers with you before entries close.

Syllabus

Every GCSE Maths Topic We Cover

The five topic areas, with the share of marks each carries at Higher tier. Ofqual sets these weightings, so they are the same on every board.

01
Number
Surds, bounds, standard form and percentage change, about 15% of marks
02
Algebra
Quadratics, simultaneous equations, iteration and proof, about 30% of marks
03
Ratio, proportion and rates of change
Direct and inverse proportion, compound measures, about 20%
04
Geometry and measures
Circle theorems, trigonometry, vectors, transformations, about 20% of marks
05
Probability and statistics
Tree diagrams, histograms, cumulative frequency, sampling, about 15%
Where the marks actually go
Algebra alone is nearly a third of the Higher paper. If one topic is worth extra lesson time, it is this one.

Practice From Real Maths Papers

Lessons work through genuine past papers and their mark schemes, not imitation questions written to look like them.

AQA

AQA GCSE Maths

Three 90-minute papers. Paper 1 is non-calculator, Papers 2 and 3 allow one. Each carries a third of the marks.

Pearson Edexcel

Edexcel GCSE Maths

The same three-paper structure as AQA, with questions worded differently. Tutors teach to the paper your child will sit.

Questions pulled from several years of papers on one topic, so a weak area gets fixed instead of revisited once.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

How a Maths lesson runs

An hour built around the marks your child is losing.

We start from the mark scheme, not the next chapter

Your tutor marks a recent paper first and finds where the method marks went. The lesson is built from those questions, not from wherever the textbook happens to be.

Past papersMethod marksCommand wordsBoth tiers

Worked live, not watched

Students solve problems on a shared whiteboard while the tutor watches the working, so a wrong method is caught as it happens.

Practice set every week

Each lesson ends with questions on the topic just covered, marked before the next one so nothing is assumed.

Exam technique

Where GCSE Maths Marks Are Really Lost

Most lost marks are not topics a student cannot do. They come from working not shown, rounding too early, and units left off the answer.

Working not shown

Method marks are awarded for the steps, not just the answer. A correct answer with no working can still score zero.

Rounding too early

Rounding mid-calculation shifts the final answer outside the accepted range. Tutors teach students to round once, at the end.

Command words missed

"Show that", "prove" and "estimate" each demand a different response. Students lose marks by answering the wrong question well.

Units and accuracy

Marks go for the unit and the stated accuracy. On a calculator paper this is the cheapest mark to drop.

Questions

GCSE Maths Questions

Should my child take Foundation or Higher?

Foundation caps the grade at 5. A child targeting 6 or above needs Higher. We review the mocks with you before entries close.

Can you prepare for a November resit?

Yes. Maths and English Language are the two subjects with a November series. We run intensive resit blocks from September.

Which boards do your Maths tutors teach?

All ten teach the AQA course and nine also teach Edexcel. Each profile lists the boards that tutor covers, subject by subject.

How many lessons a week?

One 60-minute lesson weekly suits most students. Two is common in the term before the exam, or after a weak mock.

Which calculator should my child use?

Any scientific calculator allowed by the board. Tutors teach the keystrokes for the model your child already owns, not a different one.

Is AQA Maths easier than Edexcel?

No. Ofqual regulates all three boards to the same standard and sets the same topic weightings. Only the wording of questions differs.
