Why GCSE Tutors

Six things a general language tutor will not give you.

French is four exams, not one. Most students are strong in two of the skills and quietly avoid the other two until the mock exposes them.

All four skills covered

Listening, speaking, reading and writing each carry a quarter of the marks. Lessons rotate through them rather than defaulting to grammar.

Speaking rehearsed aloud

The speaking test frightens most students. We practise the role play, the photo card and the conversation until they are routine.

Both boards covered

Your tutor teaches the AQA course and the Edexcel one, so the match is to the paper your school entered.

The right tier, chosen early

French is tiered. Foundation caps the grade at 5, so we look at the mock marks with you before entries close.

Vocabulary that is tested

Students learn the defined vocabulary list for their board, not a general word list that wastes half the effort.

Parents see the detail

Notes after each lesson and a monthly report, so you know which of the four skills moved and which did not.

The qualification

GCSE French at a Glance

GCSE French is graded 9 to 1 and entered at one of two tiers. It is one of the few subjects outside maths and science that still has tiers.

Four skills are assessed: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each is worth a quarter of the grade, so a weak skill costs a lot.

The speaking test is conducted by the school rather than sat in the exam hall, which is why rehearsing it out loud matters so much.

Syllabus

Every French Topic We Cover

The themes are set by the board, and both boards examine the same ground. These are what lessons work through.

01
Identity and relationships
Family, friends, marriage and describing people
02
Local area and travel
Town, region, holidays, transport and booking
03
School and study
Subjects, routine, rules and plans after Year 11
04
Work and future plans
Jobs, ambitions, further study and applications
05
Global issues
Environment, poverty, healthy living and social problems
06
Grammar and tenses
Past, present and future, opinions and longer sentences
Where the marks actually go
Tenses carry the top bands in writing and speaking. A student who only uses the present tense is capped however good the vocabulary.
Past papers

Practice From Real French Papers

Lessons work through genuine past papers and their mark schemes, not imitation questions written to look like them.

AQA

AQA GCSE French

Listening, speaking, reading and writing, each worth a quarter of the grade. Students sit all four at the same tier.

The speaking test is run by the school. We rehearse each part aloud so the format holds no surprises on the day.

Writing comes back against the real criteria, so a missing tense or a thin opinion shows up long before the exam.

Exam technique

Decoding command words, structuring 6-mark answers, and timing, the marks students leave on the table.

Every lessonThe difference-maker
How a French lesson runs

An hour spent speaking, not just reading.

We start from the weakest of the four skills

Your tutor checks all four skills first, then builds lessons around the one costing the most marks. Students usually know which it is and have been avoiding it.

SpeakingTensesVocabularyBoth tiers

Spoken every lesson

Students answer out loud in French from the first minute, because the speaking test rewards fluency that only comes from practice.

Writing marked weekly

Each lesson sets a short written task, marked against the criteria before the next one, so errors do not set.

Exam technique

Where French Marks Are Really Lost

Most lost marks come from one tense used throughout, opinions never justified, and a speaking test met for the first time on the day.

One tense throughout

The upper bands need past, present and future in the same piece. Students who stay in the present cannot reach them.

Opinions without reasons

Saying something is interesting earns little. The mark comes from the because that follows it.

Speaking left until last

The role play and photo card have a fixed shape. Rehearsed, they are predictable; unrehearsed, they cost a grade.

Vocabulary off the list

Each board publishes the vocabulary it will test. Learning around that list wastes the time it takes to learn it.

Questions

GCSE French Questions

Is French really tiered?

Yes. Modern languages keep tiers, like maths and science. Foundation caps the grade at 5, so the entry decision matters.

Which boards does your French tutor teach?

Both AQA and Pearson Edexcel. We have one French specialist, so availability is limited and we will tell you honestly what we can offer.

My child freezes in the speaking test.

That is the most common problem in this subject. We rehearse each part of the test out loud until the format stops being a surprise.

Can lessons be taught in French?

As much as the student can handle, increasing over time. Grammar is explained in English where that is clearer and faster.

How many hours a week do you suggest?

One hour a week suits most students. Some add a second in the weeks before the speaking test.

Does the speaking test happen in the exam hall?

No. The school runs it, usually earlier than the written papers, which is why we start rehearsing it well in advance.
