The qualification

Further Maths at a Glance

Despite the name, this is formally the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics, not a GCSE. Schools and students call it GCSE Further Maths anyway.

It is an extra qualification sat alongside GCSE Maths, aimed at students already expected to reach the top grades on the higher tier.

Two written papers decide it. Paper 1 is non-calculator and carries 80 marks, half the qualification. Grades run from 9 down to 4 only.

Syllabus

What Further Maths Adds

The content goes past higher tier GCSE and into material most students first meet at A-Level.

01
Advanced algebra
Algebraic fractions, surds, factor theorem and proof
02
Calculus
Differentiation, gradients, turning points and their nature
03
Matrices
Multiplication, transformations and the identity matrix
04
Coordinate geometry
Lines, circles, tangents and intersections
05
Trigonometry
Identities, equations and work in three dimensions
06
Functions
Notation, domain, range, composite and inverse functions
Why schools enter students for it
It bridges the gap to A-Level Maths. Students who take it usually find the first term of sixth form much less of a jump.
The papers

How Further Maths Is Examined

Two written papers, both sat in the summer, with the grade coming from the combined mark.

AQA

Paper 1

Eighty marks with no calculator. Any part of the specification can appear, so algebra and proof carry real weight.

Non-calculator50% of the grade
AQA

Paper 2

The second written paper, with a calculator permitted. Together the two papers decide the whole grade.

Grading

Grades 9 to 4 only

Nothing below a 4 is awarded. The qualification assumes a student already working at the top of higher tier.

Taken with GCSE Maths

It does not replace GCSE Maths. Students sit both, which is why timetabling it matters as much as the content.

Where Further Maths Marks Are Lost

The content is harder, but most lost marks come from the same places as GCSE: working not shown, and algebra done too quickly.

Algebra rushed

Almost every question rests on algebra. A slip in line two costs every mark that follows it.

Differentiation misapplied

Finding the gradient is the easy half. Saying what the turning point is, and proving it, is where the marks sit.

Proof left informal

A proof needs each step to follow from the last. A convincing explanation that skips steps does not score.

Working not shown

Method marks exist here too. A correct answer with nothing written down can still score very little.

How we would run it

How a lesson would run, if we can staff it.

We would start from the mark scheme

Any tutor we match would mark a recent paper first and build lessons from where the marks went, which is how the rest of the team works.

AlgebraCalculusProofPast papers

Worked live, not watched

Students solve problems while the tutor watches the working, so a wrong method is caught as it happens.

Set alongside GCSE Maths

The two qualifications overlap. A good plan uses the GCSE revision to carry part of the Further Maths load.

Every Lesson Reported Back

Whoever we match you with works the way the rest of the team does. These four reports come as standard.

  • Notes after every lesson
  • Topic checklist, red to green

Questions

Further Maths Questions

Can you teach this subject today?

Not on the core team. Tell us what you need and we will either source a specialist from our wider network or say plainly that we cannot help.

Is it actually a GCSE?

No. It is a Level 2 Certificate, graded 9 to 4, sat alongside GCSE Maths. Almost everyone still calls it GCSE Further Maths.

Who should take it?

Students comfortably on course for a grade 7 or above in higher tier Maths, usually those planning A-Level Maths.

Does it replace GCSE Maths?

No. It is an additional qualification. Students sit both sets of papers in the same exam season.

Can you help with GCSE Maths instead?

Yes. We have ten Maths specialists across AQA and Edexcel, at both tiers. That page is linked below.

What do you teach already?

Thirteen GCSE subjects with specialists on the team, across AQA and Pearson Edexcel. You will find them further down this page.
